American Spirit Captain (Relief Captain Positions)

Position: Relief Captain Positions Available

Date Needed: 2024 Sailing Season

Duration Needed: Mid-April through October 2023

Availability:  Part time, Seasonal Contract

Location: SW Washington D.C.

Destinations of Cruises:  Upper Potomac, Anacostia River and Washington Channel

Employment Job Description:  Captain for three hour charters, days, nights, holidays, and weekends.  Educational, private and public charters that are offered from April-October.  Schooner rigged sailing vessel that requires raise/ lower of sails and vessel operation under power, sail or both with passengers.  Will provide education and vessel specific familiarization.  Charters are 3 hours with a hour call time prior to and an hour post wrap/clean up, 5 hours for each charter with a possibility of multiple charters per day.  Additional work to include but limited to vessel preparation for charter, passenger interaction and education, instruction and leadership of crew (2 or more), all skills and requirements to operate a passenger vessel with regards to safety and USCG regulations, clean up and breakdown of vessel and all charter related items.

Employment Job Requirements:  50 ton USCG Master License (or greater) with Sailing Endorsement, FCC Radio Operators Permit, First aid and CPR (opportunity to renew in summer), subject to pre-employment drug testing and random testing during employment and background check, Strong people skills, experience with operating sailing passenger vessels desirable, experience with education and youth programs desirable.  Compensation to be determined based on experience (hourly), no benefits.  Will require vessel familiarization and training for operations and charter specific information.
