Welcome to the JV/Varsity High School Racing Program!

The regatta schedule will be confirmed at the start of the season. Coaching staff will be in touch with updates as needed.

Registration is a Two-Part Process.

Step One: Please submit both the website registration form along with full payment with a credit/debit card. Unpaid registrations will be automatically cancelled by the system after 15 minutes. Please make sure you have your payment information available at the time of registration to assure the completion of the online registration process.

Cancellation/Refund Policy:

Requests for cancellation 30+ days from start date would receive a full refund.
Requests for cancellation within 30 days to 14 days from start date would receive a 75% refund.
Requests for cancellations with less than 14 days prior are non-refundable

DC Sail will not offer “pro-rated” discounts or refunds once the season has commenced. Sailors are required to be fully committed to attend all scheduled practices and to complete the season prior to registration.

Spring 2026 Season:

AFTER-SCHOOL PRACTICE SCHEDULE: (4:00 PM to 7:00 PM - Sailors are "on time" if they are ready to sail at 4:00 PM.)

Varsity: Mondays, Wednesdays, Fridays

JV & Green Fleet: Tuesdays, Thursdays (& sometimes Fridays*)

*JV sailors on full teams (4+ sailors from same school) are required to attend Friday practices regularly. Additional JV & Green Fleet sailors may be invited to attend Fridays as space allows.

START OF SEASON – VARSITY: After-School Practices for Varsity will start March 2nd, 2026. The first two practices will be considered Varsity Tryouts and are mandatory for all sailors wishing to sail on the Varsity team.

START OF SEASON – JV & GF: After-School Practices for JV and Green Fleet will start March 10th, 2026.

TRYOUTS: For sailors wishing to advance to the Varsity Team, Tryouts will take place at DC Sail on March 2nd and March 4th during regular practice time. We do not "cut" as a result of Tryouts; sailors who are deemed not ready for Varsity, will still be able to sail on the JV level. Tryouts are an opportunity for Coaching Staff to evaluate sailors' skills and determine where they would best be able to learn and thrive in the coming season. (Tryouts are not required for JV or Green Fleet levels.)

REGATTAS: Sailors who elect to compete in weekend regattas during registration are eligible to compete in MDISA regattas throughout the season. Typically, sailors compete in at least two events**, but it could be many more depending on their availability and the size of their team. The regatta calendar will not be finalized until mid-February. Once dates are confirmed, we will reach out with additional information and a full calendar for the season ahead.

**Green Fleet sailors typically compete in one event their first season, but may compete in additional events depending on their school team, experience level, and as space allows.

END OF SEASON: The spring season practice schedule will officially end on May 15th, however sailors may be selected for end-of-season invitational regattas and a fleet clean-up week will follow. Expect regular practice-time commitments through May 22nd, with possible additional dates to follow.

2026 Volunteer Instructor Training Weekend (11 Apr 2026)

DC Sail's Adult lessons are taught by highly trained Volunteer Instructors.

DC Sail hosts an intensive training weekend for our new Volunteer Instructors, providing you all the information and skills necessary to successfully conduct lessons.

DC Sail Volunteer Instructors receive a special membership rate of only $135 for 12 months, with all the perks of a Super Membership, in exchange for providing a minimum of two lesson "Shifts" per month from April through October. (Existing Basic/Super members will have their membership level migrated to the Instructor level at the time of their 2026 renewal.)

Instructors teach our Adult Beginner Learn to Sail Lessons and Refresher Courses, which take place from 10:00 AM to 1:00 PM on Saturdays and Sundays during the sailing season. Season will resume April 25, 2026.

Three Instructors also teach the Intro to FJs Course will run over a single weekend, once a month in June, July and August and will take place 11:30 AM to 3:30 PM.

Requirements for Becoming a Volunteer Instructor:

Relevant sailing experience.
Successful completion of a District of Columbia Boating Safety Certification (NASBLA approved boat safety course.)
Commitment to teaching at least two lessons per month.
Ability to swim 75 yards while fully clothed.
Ability to exhibit appropriate interpersonal skills.
Participate in DC Sail training sessions and agree to follow our curriculum for consistency.
Become a paid DC Sail member at the Instructor rate (this is by invitation only after completing the Volunteer Instructor training and when registering for shifts.)
Establish a Shiftboard account. (This is the online scheduling platform we use.)
A great attitude, enjoyment in sharing sailing knowledge and skills, and a desire to have fun!

Recommended but not Required Qualifications:

US Sailing Small Boat Level 1 Instructor Certification.
Current CPR and First Aid Certifications.
US Sailing SafeSport Certification.

2026 Volunteer Instructor Training Weekend:

Saturday, April 11th and Sunday, April 12th

Mandatory Attendance both days for new DC Sail Volunteer Instructors.
Returning Volunteer Instructors who feel the need to refresh curriculum knowledge should plan to only attend on Saturday.
Time: 10:00 AM to 4:00 PM.
Continental Breakfast and Lunch will be provided on Saturday. Please bring your own food/beverages for Sunday.

DC Sail Members are cordially invited to gather at the fabulous Pearl Street Warehouse for a springtime evening of social mingling with fellow Members.

This event includes the opportunity to "Meet & Greet" with DC Sail Members of the Board of Directors. There will be a general briefing presented by Board Members at 7:15 PM.

This is a FUNDRAISING event to support our ongoing Capital Campaigns. We will be solicitating donations and will have technology available to accept secure debit/credit card payments. Cash or check donations will also be gladly accepted!

Date/Time: Monday, April 13, 2026 - Doors Open at 5:30 PM and the event will wrap up by 8:00 PM.

Capital Yacht Club - "First Sail" Event (25 Apr 2026)

In our ongoing partnership with Capital Yacht Club, we will host a "First Sail" event for interested CYC Members at our Diamond Teague Park Piers location on Saturday, April 25th. Space is limited based on the available fleet.

We will offer two "waves" of exploratory sails: 11:00 AM to 12:30 PM or 2:00 PM to 3:30 PM. Each session/wave will have space for a maximum of 10 persons. These events are for persons age 21+.

We will arrange for an experienced DC Sail Member or Staff Person/Instructor to serve as Skipper to safely take guests out for a 90-minute sail.

This is not a formal lesson but would perhaps include sharing some information related to the parts of the boat, sails, how/why the boat is moving, and if conditions are appropriate, permitting guests the opportunity to aid in the sailing of the boat through turns at the helm, and sail maneuvers - tacking and jibing.

This event is weather and water quality dependent.

Registration is required so that we can manage attendance and know who is planning to attend so that we may send out needed updates, such as weather cancellation, etc.

When registering, kindly only select one session time to attend.

There is no cost to attend for CYC Members.

Basic Members: Cost is $145. You will need to be logged into your DC Sail profile to proceed with registration.

Super Members: One complimentary Refresher Course per year. You will need to be logged into your DC Sail profile to proceed with registration. The database will recognize you and no invoice will be generated. (Admiral and Lifetime Members also qualify for this complimentary offer. Just select the "Super Member" level when registering.)

Mother's Day Cruise (10 May 2026)

Treat your Mum to an afternoon aboard the American Spirit for her special day. Sail from 2:00 PM to 5:00 PM for only $40 per person! This is a family-friendly sail and children are most welcome!

*Boarding is at 1:30 PM with a 2:00 PM departure time.

Helpful Information:

Food & Beverage: We do not offer food and beverage service on board for purchase. You're encouraged to bring along a picnic and drinks (beer/wine are permitted - no spirits, please.) Be sure to also bring drinking water to remain hydrated. Keep your food menu super simple such as sandwiches/snacks. You will need to include whatever supplies you need to to serve your food/beverage such as napkins, small paper plates, plastic cups, etc. The Crew will have two large coolers stocked with ice for passengers to share.

Little Sailors: Children are most welcome! You'll need to purchase a ticket for them, infants included. Strollers are permitted. Our Crew will stow the strollers below decks during the sail. There is no power available during the sail, so please be prepared with supplies for your children as we do not have the ability to warm food or bottles, for example.

Restroom: There is a unisex restroom on board.

What to Wear/Bring: You may wish to bring along a lap blanket and be sure to dress for the weather. Even in warm weather, it can be cooler on the water, so bring along a jacket or sweater if needed. Wear closed-toe, soft soled shoes - sneakers are perfect. Sandals, flip-flops, heels, or wedges are not permitted. This is for passenger safety as the deck can become wet and we wish for you to be safe.

Sailing Area: American Spirit is located at The Wharf on the Washington Channel. We sail down to the confluence of the Anacostia and Potomac Rivers and typically sail south on the Potomac River toward Old Town Alexandria or National Harbor. It takes about 90 minutes to reach that area and we then swing around and return to our docks to complete the three-hour sail. We can sail up the Anacostia River to the Frederick Douglass Memorial Bridge but not beyond due to her tall masts that won'd clear the bridge.

Please Note: We are unable to sail close to the Mall/Monuments due to the bridges on the Potomac River. The sailing area we access is quite beautiful and we've never had a complaint!

Cancellation: If severe weather (thunderstorms, excessive winds, etc.) prevents us from being able to safely leave the docks, we will issue a cancellation and full refund of your purchase. Please be advised that we will not cancel in the event of light rain/mist. Rain gear/poncho is then suggested. Cancellation notices are sent out via email typically two hours prior to the planned departure time.

Registration: When setting up the registration, you are the "primary" passenger. Complete the information for yourself first and then will have the option for adding guests. Example: If you have a party of four, you are Passenger One, and then will add three other guests - one at a time. Once you save everything, you'll be directed to issue payment to secure the registration.

Payment Information: Full payment must be made at the time of registration. Pending registrations without payment will be auto-cancelled by the system after 15 minutes. Please have your payment information available at the time of registration.

Intro to FJs - June Session (13 Jun 2026)

Lessons are 11:30 AM to 3:30 PM.

Current/Active Paid Membership with DC Sail is required to register for this course.

The Intro to FJs course will introduce you the exciting world of high-performance racing boats with instruction on the basics of small boat handling on our fleet of Flying Juniors (FJs).

You will learn how to properly rig and de-rig the boats, the theories behind boat balance, & how to achieve proper sail trim.

This course will also cover some of the basics of racing and includes two complimentary sessions in our Adult Race Series (Thursday evenings) directly following completion of the course.

This registration is for an individual booking of Adult Intro to FJs Course.

Intro to FJs - August Session (08 Aug 2026)

Session Dates: August 8th and August 9th

Lessons are 11:30 AM to 3:30 PM.

Current/Active Paid Membership with DC Sail is required to register for this course.

The Intro to FJs course will introduce you the exciting world of high-performance racing boats with instruction on the basics of small boat handling on our fleet of Flying Juniors (FJs).

You will learn how to properly rig and de-rig the boats, the theories behind boat balance, & how to achieve proper sail trim.

This course will also cover some of the basics of racing and includes two complimentary sessions in our Adult Race Series (Thursday evenings) directly following completion of the course.

This registration is for an individual booking of Adult Intro to FJs Course.
